LEONARD 'BUZZ' CECIL
Leonard 'Buzz' Cecil, CTDI, TDCH, Cert.CBST, Certified Clicker Trainer was born of American parents in Swindon, England in 1952. The family moved first back to the US where he went on to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music graduatig in 1974 with a Bachelors of Music Education. After teaching for a couple of years, he moved to Switzerland where he's been living ever since. Until 2001, he taught music, first as a trumpet teacher and later a conduting teacher. In 1995 he founded the Basel Trombone Quarter in which he still plays today. In 2001, a career change led to work as a Systems Engineer until he retired in 2014.
Buzz grew up with dogs, albeit training played no real role, more than teaching a sometimes 'sit'. In 1999, the family adopted Luna, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog mix. Modern, gentler methods were just getting started then, so rewards and praise were mixed with the leash pops, loud, louder and loudest commands and alpha rolls. Then came Vela, a Flat-Coated Retriever, and his first pure-bred dog (all the others had been rescues). Vela is a beauty but because of her character, she forced Buzz to seek other methods. He stumbled across clicker training and hasn't looked back.
Buzz does his version of Canine Freestyle with Vela (started with help from Claudia Moser) while his wife does Dummy work with Vela. Thanks to Vela, he expanded his already broad-based dog-knowledge through studies for the Certificate Canine Behavior Science and Technology (CBST)from James O’Heare’s Companion Animal Sciences Institute. In 2012 he completed the first ever Swiss Clicker Trainer certification course under Claudia Moser and Simone Fasel.
